How to Extend the Service Life of Electric Forklift Batteries?

Extending the lifespan of electric forklift batteries requires a multi-faceted approach encompassing charge management, routine maintenance, operational habits, and environmental control. The following are specific recommendations:

 

I. Charge Management: Avoid Overcharging and Over-discharging

Lead-Acid Batteries: Recharge when the remaining capacity is no lower than 30% to avoid deep discharge. Utilize constant-voltage charging during the final stage of the charging cycle to minimize the risk of overcharging.

Lithium Batteries: Ensure that charging and discharging currents and voltages adhere to the manufacturer's specifications to prevent overcharging and over-discharging. For daily use, charge the battery to 70–80%; for long-distance or heavy-duty use, fully charge the battery, but reduce the charge level to below 80% as soon as possible thereafter.

 

II. Routine Maintenance: Regular Inspection and Cleaning

Electrolyte Levels: Check electrolyte levels monthly; if the level drops more than 10mm below the lead plates, replenish with distilled or deionized water. Use a battery watering gun to accurately control the electrolyte level.

Cleaning and Inspection: Clean the battery casing and terminals monthly to remove dust and oxidation buildup. Perform a full charge every 1–2 months to calibrate the battery. Assess the battery's health status every six months; contact customer service if the voltage difference between individual cells in a lead-acid battery exceeds 0.3V, or if the internal resistance of a lithium battery exceeds 50mΩ.

 

III. Operational Habits: Avoid Extreme Usage

Charging Timing: After use, the battery is typically at an elevated temperature; allow it to rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour before charging. In cold winter environments, move the vehicle indoors to a warm environment and let it sit for 30 minutes before charging.

Avoid Rapid Acceleration and Braking: Minimize sudden, high-current discharge surges from the battery to protect its internal structure.

 

IV. Environmental Control: Appropriate Temperature and Storage

Storage Environment: Store the battery in a well-ventilated, dry area with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 25°C, avoiding direct sunlight. If the battery is to be taken out of service for an extended period, keep it fully charged and perform periodic maintenance charging.

Extreme Weather: In summer, avoid charging the battery while it is exposed to direct sunlight; in winter, prevent the battery from remaining in sub-zero environments for prolonged periods.

 

V. Safety and Servicing

Safety Management: Ensure that charging areas are well-ventilated and kept away from open flames or ignition sources. Operators must wear appropriate protective equipment and strictly adhere to safety regulations.

Periodic Servicing: Quarterly, test the performance of the braking system and inspect the condition of the brake pads and brake fluid. Regularly check cable connections to ensure they are secure and to prevent poor electrical contact.
